A string of thunderstorms delayed flights leaving Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Friday morning. As of 12:15 p.m. Friday, the Federal Aviation Administration was reporting delays up to an hour and a half. By 3:30 p.m., the delay was about a half hour for flights departing from Atlanta, according to the FAA.
But storms in the Northeast are delaying flights arriving in Boston and New York an average of two hours, according to the FAA.In Atlanta, The National Weather Service is calling for thunderstorms and winds up to 20 mph for most of Friday afternoon.
The Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook for parts of north and central Georgia, including north Fulton, Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Rockdale and Coweta counties. The outlook is for thunderstorms, high winds and lightning strikes.
Drivers should also be on the look out for flooding in low areas.Rain will decrease Friday night, with only a 30 percent chance of showers after 9 p.m.The Weather Service is calling for a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms and temperatures in the high 90s for Saturday, and a 50 percent chance of rain for Sunday.The FAA is also investigating to see if high winds caused a helicopter to crash in Cobb County. The helicopter crashed around 11:30 a.m. at McCollum Field in Kennesaw, firefighters said.
An adult and child on board suffered very minor injuries, and were being transported to a local hospital as a precaution, firefighters said.Staff Reporter Alexis Stevens contributed to this report.
