Study abroad programs can change

Pura Vida! My daughter had an amazing fall term. Jessica was one of 17 North Central College students and a teacher who went on a study trip to Costa Rica from late August through mid-December. Pura Vida is a phrase commonly used by Costa Ricans that is both a greeting and a way of life.As a parent, it is a bit of a leap of faith, combined with a lot of preparation, to send your student off to another country for several weeks or months. Study abroad can be part of a student's major or just a valuable part of his or her college experience.

NCC offers group programs to China, Japan, and Costa Rica and also has 12 exchange programs and nine direct enrollment programs available, in addition to December term options for two to three weeks. NCC professor Jeff Anstine of Aurora, who accompanied my daughter's group, says this type of trip is a wonderful opportunity for students to experience another culture and language, gain a more global view of the world and open their thinking.

On my daughter's Costa Rica trip, students lived with host families in Quepos and attended COSI, a learning center on a mountain with stunning views of the ocean and jungle below. There they had Spanish classes and Ecotourism classes, the latter taught by Anstine. They also had cooking and dancing classes. While in Quepos the students had plenty of free time and enjoyed visiting the beach and local hangouts, and many weekends they took trips to other parts of the country.

They also had the experience of moving to the capital city of San Jose in November. There they participated in internships or more schooling for the final six weeks. How scary it must be to be so far from home and move in with a family you have never met before, and to do so twice in a matter of weeks.Things in San Jose are very different than in Quepos. The weather is cooler and the city surroundings offer restaurants, movie theaters and shopping malls like any large city anywhere.

While in Costa Rica, the students experienced an earthquake, visiting volcanoes and national parks, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, snorkeling, boat rides, whale and dolphin watching, nature exploration, riding on a moped, playing in a waterfall, living near a beach, living in a big city, and all kinds of things that are very different from being at home. Most of them also learned to survive without cell phones and Internet access.

They found that they actually enjoyed the more relaxed lifestyle.Visit my blog at statar.blogspot.com for comments from several NCC students who went on the trip. For more information about NCC's program, visit northcentralcollege.edu/x2920.xml.Aurora University has also offered May term study abroad programs since 2005.The programs designed by AU faculty go to the following countries: Mexico, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, England and Ireland, France, Greece, Luxembourg and Belgium, Spain, Turkey, China, Hungary, Italy, South Africa and Italy. More than 200 students have participated since the program began, and the average is about 40 students per year.

Flights to London from Newark

Continental Airlines said Friday that it will increase flights between its hub at Newark Liberty International Airport and London's Heathrow Airport this year.Continental, which already has three daily non stops on its Newark Heathrow route, said it will add another daily non-stop in March and one more in October. Continental also has a twice daily service from Houston to London.New York Heathrow is a flagship route for Continental, Jeff Smisek, Continental chairman, president and chief executive officer said in a statement.

The news comes a month after the airline announced that it wouldn't resume flights between Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and Heathrow in the summer of 2010. The seasonal service was Northeast Ohio's only nonstop to Europe.Continental said the two developments were unconnected. The takeoff and landing rights at Heathrow that were tied to the Cleveland service went back to the carrier that owned that slot, an airline spokeswoman said. It was not made available to Continental again in 2010.

Continental said it checked with all 33 carriers at Heathrow that had suitable times for Cleveland service, but none was willing to part with a slot.Still, Continental did locate enough space at Heathrow to accommodate two additional year round flights from Newark.Aviation consultant Robert Mann said Continental probably got more Heathrow takeoff and landing rights by trading with one of its partners in the Star Alliance, the international confederation of airlines it joined in October. One new partner is bmi, the second-largest slot holder at Heathrow after British Airways.

bmi uses a lot of its takeoff and landing rights at Heathrow for short haul flights, in essence under-utilizing slots that are valued at millions of dollars, Mann said.In a trade with Continental bmi would give up a slot in exchange for the ability to put its code on certain Continental flights, Mann predicted. That would give the British carrier access to the U.S. market without actually flying a plane across the Atlantic, an investment risk of $1 million or more roundtrip.Delta Air Lines used the same strategy to get Heathrow slots from its Skyteam partners.

Flight to Singapore

Last December my wife and I had a wonderful trip to beautiful Austria. When it was time to leave for Kuala Lumpur, our nightmare started. We would be flying via Paris and Singapore. Our plane in Vienna arrived 30 minutes late due to bad weather and we waited another 30 minutes on board for flight clearance before we flew to Paris. We were so worried that we would miss our connecting flight to Singapore. We landed in Paris just in time as we were escorted by an airline employee directly to our gate. She kept reassuring us that everything was fine.

However, at the last minute, she told us the gate had already closed. We were just five minutes late. We were led to a special counter where our next flight out was arranged. We were told we would get free accommodation and breakfast. The next morning, with a whole day in Paris, we decided to head to town for some sightseeing. But alas, we did not have our luggage with us, which meant we had no thermal wear, scarf and beanie. All we had were our jackets and gloves.

We spent a good time exploring Paris and taking pictures. However, the weather was freezing and my wife could not endure it anymore, so we headed back to the airport. We had a quick bite there and proceeded to the boarding gate. This time the plane arrived on time, and we quickly boarded the plane. However, we were inside the plane for a good two hours. The plane had to be sprayed with a defrosting agent before it was cleared for take-off. Again, with one hour transit time in Singapore, we knew we had already missed that flight.

Indeed, we arrived in Singapore 30 minutes late and again, we were whisked to the staff counter where our accommodation was arranged. This time we checked into a five-star hotel room and had our free dinner, which cost S$136 (RM331) for the two of us. After dinner, we took a romantic stroll at Clarke Quay before calling it a night. The next morning, we had our breakfast before heading back to the airport for our flight to KL. The hotel even provided the taxi fare for the journey which we appreciated. We flew back to KL, this time without any more delays or missed flights tired and aching but relieved. We later found out that if we had left Austria a few days later, we would definitely get stranded there due to the heavy snow

Flights Delayed Due To Snow And Ice

At Memphis International Airport, an almost army of snow plows roll out to clear the runways of the wintry weather that's crippled airline flights.Larry Cox is the president and CEO of the Memphis Shelby County Airport Authority. Cox said, Normally we don't have this. Some of the airlines don't have as much de-icing equipment and they do delay or cancel flights, but not to the extent we're seeing today.

A winter storm has de-icing crews in overdrive trying to keep up with the snow and ice.Cox said, When the airplanes get delayed at an airport for de-icing of an airplane it can throw the airplane and crews out of schedule and mess up our whole system.Inside the terminal, the arrival and departure board shows the cancellation of almost 200 flights.Cory Kirchoff and Brandie Kellin were trying to get back home to Wisconsin. Kirchoff said, We were on our way to the cities after working down south for two weeks from up north and got locked up in the ice storm here. So, we'll have to go back to the hotel and chill for a while.

Kellin had some reservations about flying. Kellin said, It's my first time flying, too. On the way down here I flew I was pretty nervous. It was raining and icy. So I was scared to fly. I'm kind of happy we're not flying. But not flying will mean Kellin and others will have to wait for the weather to improve and also wait before they're reunited with their families.Kellin said, Pretty depressing. We've been gone for two weeks. We have children and we're ready to see them and its kind of sad and I just miss my babies so bad. It's recommended that if you are scheduled to fly Friday night or Saturday to first check with your airline either online or by phone to make sure your flight hasn't been cancelled.

Flights to Delhi

Flights to Delhi in mid-February could be a more rocking affair than is often the case. That is because fans of the rock genre may be flocking to the region to attend the Rock in India event, which is scheduled to take place on February 20th.If flights to Delhi are not available, flights to Bangalore for February 22nd will allow travellers to attend the second staging of the festival.

However, some criticism of the event has arisen this year after the billing took on a slightly different format to previous years.Past headliners have included Iron Maiden, Machine Head and Megadeth; but this year's concert is led by the Backstreet Boys and Richard Marx.As part of the event, the organisers have created a rock democracy where local rock groups are listed on the festival's website. The initiative is intended to give Indian rock acts the opportunity to connect directly with their fans, as well as being showcased during the concert itself to visitors from all over the world.

Flights to China

Taiwanese airlines were getting the worst hours for flights to China during the Lunar New Year holiday, reports said Wednesday.Taiwanese business people working in China complained that Chinese airlines had obtained three times as many slots for flights during the holiday next month, while the flights by Taiwanese airlines were stuck during the unpopular hours of the night, the Chinese language Liberty Times reported.

According to an announcement by the Civil Aeronautics Administration Tuesday, five Taiwanese airlines would operate 98 flights during the holiday period around Lunar New Year's day on February 14, while nine Chinese airlines were awarded a total of 287 flights.China Southern Airlines said it needed the space to bring Chinese tour groups to Taiwan, the paper reported. The flight arrangements could bring in more than 40,000 Chinese tourists to Taiwan or more than 3,000 a day, affecting the quality of travel for local holidaymakers, reports said.

Extra holiday flights by Taiwanese airlines from Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen to Taiwan usually left after 11 p.m. as China used its local advantage to organize its routes, the Liberty Times quoted CAA official Yeh Yung-ching as saying. An Air China flight could leave Beijing at about 8 in the morning and take off from Taoyuan on the return leg at around noon, while a China Southern flight arrived in Taiwan at around 3:00 p.m., giving Taiwanese travelers ample opportunity to spend Lunar New Year's Eve at home, the paper said.

In contrast, the China Airlines flights left Taiwan between midnight and 2 a.m. and took off from Beijing at 5 or 6:50 in the morning.TransAsia Airways was awarded timeslots for two flights between Shanghai and Taichung which coincided with the Central Taiwanese airport’s closure for the night, the paper said. The same problem affected at least eight potential flights between Taipei's Sungshan Airport and Shanghai and Hangzhou.Apart from travelers blaming the government for failing to intervene on their behalf, travel agencies were reportedly also complaining that ticket fares were still higher than before despite the substantial increase in the number of flights.

Flight to Hong Kong

Cathay Pacific Airways reported today that it is increasing the frequency of its services from Hong Kong to Seoul and adjusting the time of its service between Hong Kong and Mumbai. From 2 May the airline will add four weekly flights to Seoul, with another three added from 1 July, following which Cathay Pacific will operate its 2008 level of five daily flights on the route.

The airline's daily non-stop flights from Hong Kong to Mumbai will be retimed to depart Hong Kong at 21:50 in order to improve connectivity from markets such as the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Flights to Europe

Flights to Myrtle Beach

In the past three months, Horry County has welcomed three new flights to the Myrtle Beach International Airport, but have you wondered who is paying for the marketing and recruiting?
The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, along with Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday, put a marketing package together. In 2009, Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce President Brad Dean says the money to pay for that package came from private donations. However this year, he says it's coming from the 1 percent tourism tax.

There's probably a better application of that 1 percent tourism tax, said Patrick Keese.Keese flew into Myrtle Beach Wednesday, but he feels like his tax dollars should go towards other projects like roads and local attractions. That alone should draw tourists here because it is a great area with a great climate, said Keese.Beginning in April, American Airlines will offer a direct flight to Dallas, TX, from Myrtle Beach International Airport. Dean says normally the money spent getting flights like that to come to the area would have come from state grants, private contributions or the local accommodations tax.

Ultimately, if the area is attractive, people I think are going to come in any way with or without a particular promotion on an airline, said Keese.Dean says for every promotional dollar spent on marketing, $50 usually comes back in community returns. If that can be substantiated, that's not a bad thing. Those metrics are good if in fact that's true, said Keese.Reg Keough flew in from Pennsylvania Wednesday to see his son and says he's seeing the effects of Myrtle Beach advertising in the Keystone State. It seems like they're advertising more up there for Myrtle Beach and talking more about it, said Keough. If you ask him, there should be more flights, and more money spent to recruit them. He also feels the Myrtle Beach International Airport could use a few more flights. In the end, he may get his wish. Dean says there's a chance Allegiant and Direct Air may expand their routes this year.

Students attend fair despite economy, security concerns

Despite recent security threats and a lagging economy, USC students came in full force to the spring Study Abroad Fair Friday afternoon. It’s a risk I’m willing to take, said Hannah Sue, second-year exercise science student, concerning widespread warnings about flying internationally. The Study Abroad Fair allows students to learn about available programs, hear about the experiences of recently returned participants and understand financial aid and course credits abroad.

Many students at the fair said that their undergraduate educations provided once in a lifetime opportunities to travel and that concerns about finances or security were not major obstacles.
You’re only an undergraduate for so long, and when you go out into the real world, these kinds of opportunities just seem to slip away, said Abigail Agati, a second year English student.Referring to recent issues with international airline security, Agati added, You can’t worry about that, because the moment you start worrying about that, you’re going to be that person who never leaves their house, and that’s not the way life is supposed to be lived.

Maureen Fair, a second year Spanish student, agreed that while flying made her a little nervous, security has not had any effect on her plans to study abroad. It’s just one of those things you keep in the back of your mind, Fair said.Agati said she was surprised to find money was not a major factor in studying abroad because of the scholarships that USC and affiliate programs provide for students. They’re basically saying, ‘If you need the money, let’s find it for you, Agati said.

John Cuenin, a first-year political science student, said study abroad can be especially affordable in locations where the U.S. dollar has a favorable exchange rate, such as countries in Latin America or Asia.According to the Study Abroad Office, approximately 850 USC undergraduates studied abroad in the 2008-09 school year, and 1,800 students attended the fair. While business and liberal arts students tend to study abroad more than any others, students at the fair gave a variety of reasons for wanting to participate.I want to work for the U.S. State Department, so I want to get a different experience with different languages and cultures, and I just want to experience the world when I have a chance, Cuenin said.Students attending the fair said they found the event extremely helpful, with representatives from more than 20 program providers in 35 different countries available to answer questions.I didn’t know about a lot of these programs at all, Fair said. It’s made me want to go even more.

Reduce flight to Dublin

Airline Ryanair will reduce flights from Dublin by up to 20 per cent this summer.Ryanair blamed the cuts on rising airport charges and the Irish tourist tax. A spokesman for the airline said: Ireland, and Dublin Airport in particular, are now high-cost destinations, compared to other European cities where airports are lowering costs and governments are scrapping tourist taxes.
The Irish carrier expected total traffic at Dublin to fall from 20 million to 18 million this year. Cuts in Ryanair's winter schedule from Dublin are also expected to be announced over the coming weeks.

Southwest delay many flights

Wild weather pounded Southern California on Thursday with heavy rain, snow, and a tornado in Ventura. Residents said it sounded like a freight train. It tore the roof off a barn, toppled trees, and damaged cars. Also in Arizona the wind blew over two big tents at an auto auction in Scottsdale. Thousands of people managed to get out OK, but the wind caused major damage to the tents and some very expensive cars. The effects of that extreme weather in Arizona and Southern California were felt here in the Bay Area.

At the Oakland International Airport there were lots of passengers stuck waiting after Southwest Airlines cancelled more than 400 flights on Thursday 61 of them going in or out of the Bay Area.Cancelled is the one word air travelers hate to see, but at the Oakland airport it was simply unavoidable. We got here for a 4:55 flight, which they changed to 7:05 and then as we were sitting there they told us that flight was cancelled completely, said Southwest passenger Jeri Yancey.

As miserable as it is been in the Bay Area, it was not the weather here that was to blame. Instead, it was the heavy rain and dangerous crosswinds in Southern California and Arizona.
Southwest cancelled more than 400 flights today going to and from Burbank, Ontario, Orange County, San Diego, Phoenix and Tucson.Lisa Lopez says it is better to be cautious. She says her flight from Ontario to Oakland Wednesday was crazy.

I'd rather them cancel the flight and have me safe than to experience that turbulence again. Yeah, the plane was like extremely rocky said Southwest passenger Lisa Lopez. For workers at the ticket counter, it is been a busy day trying to help passengers find another way out. Travelers have certainly been persistent. Keith Grandbois' got a midnight flight to Ontario after his 4 p.m. flight was cancelled. Nevertheless, he returned to the line, hoping to do better.

I'm pressing my luck, I'm rolling the dice. I mean, what's the worst that's going to happen so I'll try to get on standby on some of the other flights, if not I land at about 1 in the morning, says Grandbois. Some passengers did hear that others decided to rent a car and drive down to Southern California, but Elena Rodriguez decided against it. She says waiting around at the airport hasn't been too big of a deal.I'm going from coffee shop to coffee shop and it's a good thing I have a book in my bag, says passenger Elena Rodriguez.Southwest does its best to call each passenger affected by a cancellation, but the airline still recommends passengers check their website for more information.

SFO flights delay

Flights at San Francisco International Airport are expected to be delayed by about 45 minutes today due to low cloud ceilings and stormy weather, an airport duty manager said.A ground delay program will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., meaning flights will arrive at a reduced rate, duty manager Linda Perry said.

UD study abroad sends 1,103 students in other countries

A total of 1,103 University of Delaware students are studying abroad in countries around the world during Winter Session, with more than 80 programs offered in more than 40 subjects in 45 nations and all led by UD faculty. Our study abroad programs are designed and directed by faculty who are extremely committed to student learning in a way which has lifelong impact, said Lesa Griffiths, associate provost for international programs from the UD Institute for Global Studies. Their willingness to create such enriching student experiences makes our program unique among most other study abroad programs in the U.S.

Griffiths added that UD students embrace study abroad because they have so many choices and can find a program that is related to their major and or personal interests. Because students and faculty travel together, this program really exemplifies learning and mentoring outside the classroom.Several of the study abroad programs are communicating what they are learning through blogs.A marine science and geology program in New Zealand, led by faculty directors Douglas Miller, associate professor in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, and Art Trembanis, assistant professor in the Department of Geological Sciences, is reporting at this blog site. The faculty members are accompanied by geology graduate student Adam Skarke and 28 undergraduate study abroad participants.

New Zealand's Waikato Times newspaper ran a feature about the study abroad program, which is making use of UD's automated underwater vehicle AUV in cooperation from researchers at Waikato University. The article notes the participation of Craig Cary, who is on the faculty of both UD and Waikato. The AUV, nicknamed Dora, was used to study the effects of algal blooms and human activity on lakes.Traveling in Brazil is a study abroad program in plant and soil sciences, led by faculty directors Susan Barton and Julie Bruck, both assistant professors in the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences. They are reporting at this blog site.

Students from the School of Nursing are involved in a study abroad program that is taking them to Australia and also Hawaii. The program is led by faculty director Amy Johnson, professor in the School of Nursing. They are reporting at this blog site. Also in Australia is an ecology and wildlife conservation study abroad program being led by faculty directors Jacob Bowman, associate professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology, and Jonathan Cox, a skilled photographer and instructor in the Department of Art. They are reporting at this blog site.

Traveling around the world is a study abroad program in disabilities studies, led by faculty directors Kim Musheno, supplemental faculty in the School of Education, and Laura Eisenman, associate professor in the School of Education. This group includes 23 students who are studying in Ghana, the United Arab Emirates, Nepal and Thailand. They are reporting at this blog site.

Ryanair reduce Dublin flights

LOW-COST airline Ryanair said is to reduce flights at Dublin Airport by up to 20 per cent for the Northern Hemisphere summer. The planned reduction translates to a loss of 150 jobs including pilots, crew members and engineers. At least 2000 further support jobs were also expected to be shed at Dublin.

Ryanair blamed the cuts on rising airport charges and the tourist tax saying, Ireland, and Dublin Airport in particular, are now high-cost destinations, compared to other European cities where airports are lowering costs and governments are scrapping tourist taxes. The carrier expected total traffic at Dublin to fall from 20 million to 18 million this year. Further cuts in Ryanair's winter schedule were due to be announced later.

Emirates to restart A380 flights to JFK

Emirates Airline, the biggest customer for Airbus' A380 aircraft, Thursday said it plans to redeploy the superjumbo on its New York service during the second half of the year after pulling it off the route last June.It remains our intention to reinstate the A380 on the DXB-JFK route in the second half of the year, a spokesperson told Zawya Dow Jones.

Emirates, which took delivery of its eighth A380 earlier this month, started flying the double decker aircraft to New York late 2008, but pulled the superjumbo from the route months later due to falling passenger demand. The carrier now flies the superjumbo to Toronto, London Heathrow, Paris, Seoul, Bangkok, Sydney and Auckland. It will start A380 services to Jeddah from February.
Emirates currently has 58 A380s on order at a value of more than $17 billion at list prices.

A Free Study Guide For Every Student

For high school seniors applying to college, there are a lot of things to consider which school to go to, whether to live on campus or commute, and what to do about the rising cost of tuition. However, what they might not consider is the prospect of having to carry studying skills into an entirely new learning environment. Fortunately, a UB professor has some suggestions for students who are looking into pursuing higher education. In 1999, William J. Rapaport, PhD., a computer science and engineering professor and affiliated philosophy and linguistics professor at UB, wrote a guide to help his stepdaughter prepare for college. Today, it has helped students from countries all over the world get better grades. Rapaport's 10th anniversary edition of this manual, How to Study A Brief Guide, is available for public use at this site.

The guide is presented in an easy to read format with short paragraphs and comics that illustrate each of his individual points. Rapaport includes tips that advise students how to manage their time, read textbooks effectively, do research for and write essays, and more. Since he published the guide, students in the US, Spain, China, India, Sweden, Australia, and other countries have used the tips to improve their own study habits and grades.Rapaport said that he based his techniques on skills that he learned by branching out from his original field of mathematics in college. He majored in math as an undergraduate, but studied philosophy in graduate school. Rapaport's techniques in the guide are mostly based on information in cognitive science literature, but he said that his experience in multiple fields let him see that what works in math can work in other fields as well.

As a math major, I always read things slowly and carefully, Rapaport said. Because of the cumulative nature of math, I made sure I understood everything before going on to a new topic. When I started to study philosophy, I just applied the same techniques and they worked geared his guide toward educating and helping college freshmen. However, he said that he has heard of students in high school, middle school, and even elementary school benefiting from his information as well, based on comments that he has received from online readers, parents, and teachers in various grade levels. Regardless of what age a student is, Rapport's guide may very well prove to be a useful read.

Flights to Antarctica

Travelers to Antarctica can skip the Drake Passage when traveling to Antarctica with Quark Expeditions. This time saving addition to the polar specialist's extensive selection of Antarctic cruises reduces the Drake Passage crossing from over 2 days to less than 2 hours!A flight from Punta Arenas, Chile, to Antarctica is the key. The BAE 146 jet aircraft carries 62 passengers and is built to land on short runways, essential in Antarctica. The Antarctic fly and cruise program saves travelers approximately 100 hours of sailing time when compared to traditional expeditions!

A quick crossing does not mean reduced time in Antarctica. Travelers spend the same amount of time exploring the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands as they would on traditional Antarctic expeditions 5 days they just get there more quickly! They board the expedition vessel, Ocean Nova, directly in Antarctica, off the Chilean Research Base Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva, on King George Island.Ocean Nova, with an ice strengthened hull, was built for navigating the ice dotted waters of coastal Greenland. All cabins have exterior views and bathrooms en suite. A glass-enclosed observation lounge converts to a modern presentation room. The vessel has navigated Antarctic waters with unparalleled success, including the challenging Weddell Sea.

Flights to Shanghai

Direct flights between the Taipei Songshan Airport and the Shanghai Hongqiao Airport are likely to be launched before World Expo 2010 Shanghai opens on May 1, as Deputy Shanghai Mayor Tang Dengjie said Friday that both sides have completed various technical preparations and are working hard to kick off direct flights as early as possible.Tang spoke at a seminar on the enforcement of laws governing protection of Taiwanese investors in mainland China, saying that the Shangshan Hongqiao Airport has completed its renovation work.

For instance, a second runway has been completed after three years construction, and China Eastern Airlines has just concluded successful trial flights using the new runway and is poised to operate direct flights between the Hongqiao Airport and Taipei Songshan Airport.Taiwanese investors in Shanghai and neighboring Kuanshan and Suzhou said they were quite pleased to hear the encouraging news, as it will be much more convenient for them to flight between Taipei and Shanghai.

At the moment, Chinese planes coming to Taiwan presently take off and land at the Shanghai Pudong Airport on the east side of China's largest city. But after Shanghai-Taipei flights begin, they can use the Shanghai Hongqiao Airport in Puxi on the west side, which is only a quarter the distance from downtown Shanghai as the Pudong Airport and can reduce the total travel time between the two cities to only two hours.Since investors and businesspeople from Taiwan live and work mostly in the Puxi district, it will save them much transport time when traveling between Taipei and Shanghai.

Domestic airlines, including China Airlines and Trans Asia Airways, said they expected direct flights between Songshan Airport and Hongqiao Airport to be realized “the sooner, the better,” adding that they can use 180-seat A320 planes and 150-seat Boeing 737-800 planes to serve the route.Meanwhile, officials with the Civil Aeronautics Administration said that they have yet to be officially informed that direct flights between Songshan Airport and Hongqiao Airport will be advanced to March from their original scheduled beginning after the conclusion of Expo Shang Oct. 31.The officials said that the expansion of the runways at Songshan Airport is slated to be completed by the end of September for use by at least 270-seat airplanes.

Flights to Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Foreign airlines that had suspended their flights to the city due to security concerns about five months ago have started preparations to resume their operations and Air Arabia has become the first one to start flying on the Sharjah Peshawar route.Sources said the Air Arabia began flying to Peshawar on January 7. It has three flights a week between Sharjah and Peshawar. There were reports that the Emirates Airlines would resume flight to Peshawar around February 2. The Qatar Airways could follow suit in the first week with flights between Doha and Peshawar, to be followed by the Gulf Air and Etihad Airways.

The sixth Gulf based airline that used to fly to Peshawar was the Saudi Arabian Airlines. It too could resume operations to Peshawar once the other airlines do so. Except the Qatar Airways, the other five airlines had suspended flights to Peshawar following the rocket attacks on the Peshawar International Airport in mid-August. The Qatar Airways also stopped flying to Peshawar after a while due to the heightened security concerns. The halt to rocket attacks in recent months and the reopening of the Pearl Continental Hotel, Peshawar on January 1 after remaining closed for months following the bombing in June 9 have persuaded the foreign airlines to resume their flights to Peshawar.

Flights to Malaysia

Southeast Asia’s biggest low cost carrier yesterday launched its maiden flights from Taipei to Sabah, Malaysia, after starting service between Taipei and Kuala Lumpur in July and between Taipei and Bangkok in September.Despite the typically slow season ahead of the Lunar New Year, passenger rates for the flights were better than expected, the Malaysia based company said.I was a bit worried at the beginning because of the low season in January, but today’s passenger load in both directions saw over 100 passengers, Kathleen Tan AirAsia’s senior vice president for the Asia Pacific region, said at a press conference yesterday.

More than 30,000 tickets for the new route have been sold since they became available online, the company said, adding that most Taiwanese visitors to Sabah are young adults.Tan said that the company is planning to add Kaohsiung Kuala Lumpur flights and a new route from Taipei to Phuket in the south of Thailand this year because of increasing demand.Last November, we established a hub in Phuket and now we are in the process of estimating the direct flight time between Taipei and the island, she said. If it takes less than four hours, we will offer a Taipei-Phuket route.

In addition, a total of nine new Malaysia India routes will be announced at the end of this month, including eight from Kuala Lumpur and one from Penang, Tan said, adding that there are no direct flights from Taiwan to India.Visits from Malaysia to Taiwan edged up 15 percent last year, marking the only increase among visits from Southeast Asian nations to Taiwan, Tan said.

Flights in Kansas

Although Midwest Airlines’ new owner is shifting the company’s headquarters, it doesn’t plan to shrink Midwest’s Kansas City hub.Rather, Republic Airways Holdings Inc. is considering restoring some of the service reductions that Midwest made in Kansas City, just as it has been doing at Midwest’s former headquarters in suburban Milwaukee, a Republic spokesman said in a Friday e mail response.

In August, Midwest sold to Republic, which also owns Denver based Frontier Airlines. Executive management functions for both airlines are being consolidated at Republic’s Indianapolis headquarters, the company said Thursday. The integration of the two branded operations Frontier and Midwest should conclude by the end of the second quarter, according to a release.

Republic has yet to discuss any service restorations with Kansas City International Airport following its purchase of Midwest, other than the added seasonal service to Fort Myers, Fla., KCI spokesman Justin Meyer said Friday. But the company would be in a good position to take advantage of markets such as Raleigh N.C.; Austin, Texas; and New Orleans, to which about 100 KCI passengers fly each day, but there are no nonstop routes.

Republic’s release said the company is buying three new Airbus A320 jets and seven new Embraer 190 aircraft during the first half of 2010, which will let the two carriers expand service to new destinations and add more flights on current routes.Midwest has been a business travelers’ favorite and a top carrier at KCI, with almost 6 percent of market share in November, the most recently reported month. Frontier had about 3.4 percent market share. In 2008, Midwest cut some service from KCI.

Republic also owns Chautauqua Airlines, Lynx Aviation, Republic Airlines and Shuttle America, which together with Midwest and Frontier offer about 1,600 flights a day to 119 cities in 44 states, Canada, Costa Rica and Mexico. Midwest and Frontier are the two branded airlines; the other flights operate through fixed fee airline services agreements with five U.S. airlines. Republic’s airlines employ about 11,000 aviation professionals.

Flights to Florida

OKLAHOMA CITY New flights at Will Rogers World Airport will make traveling to Florida a little easier. Frontier Airlines is now offering non stop flights to Orlando and Tampa starting Friday. It was somewhat of a surprise, a city this large, doing this well, didn't have such a service says Daniel Shurz, Frontier Airlines. The new non stop flights are the first ever offered to the Sunshine State out of Oklahoma City.

Airport officials are working to expand service that allows passengers to arrive at their final destination without changing planes. It's always a tough sell because it's very competitive. There are many cities besides Oklahoma City vying for these same routes, says airport spokeswoman Karen Carney.Over the past few years, Will Rogers World Airport like other airports, lost non-stop service to several cities. As the economy turns around, airlines are showing interest in adding flights.A top selling point for airport officials is the city's continued growth.

It's important to communicate what is happening in the community, what are the positives, how is it going, how's it expanding and we've got a lot of good things going on in Oklahoma City says Carney. In the next few months additional flights will be added to Los Angeles and Denver.Meanwhile, the non stop flights to Florida are seasonal they end in April.

Flight to Iraq

Lufthansa is now going to become the first major European carrier in 20 years to launch services to Baghdad. The German carrier says that it is planning to flight to the Iraqi capital and Erbil in the north from Frankfurt and Munich come this summer. Adding these new services was said to be brought on due to high demand.A spokesman at Lufthansa, Boris Ogursky, said that the demand goes in both directions right now. He confirmed that a start date for this new service should be around mid 2010. However, he noted that it is still way too soon to actually give an official launch date.

Lufthansa first started flight to Baghdad back in 1956. However, the carrier had to stop their operations there in 1990 because of the Gulf War, when United States led forces reversed Iraq’s invasion on Kuwait. Since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in 2003, Iraq has struggled to exploit vast crude oil reserves due to civil war. However, now that security is finally improving, the Iraqi government now hopes to triple oil output from 2.4 million barrels a day to 7 million over he next six years. Lufthansa’s application for the routes is being considered under terms of an initial aviation agreement reached with Iraq’s government in October.

Meanwhile, German low cost carrier, Air Berlin, has published an online flight schedule to both Erbil and Sulimaniyah from four German cities in anticipation of starting services as early as next month. The carrier is entering the market because of interest from an Iraq base charter customer, according to a spokeswoman for Air Berlin.

Study Abroad application start January 15th

If spending a semester or year abroad in 2010-2011 is something that interests you it's time to get a start on the applications. This is particularly true if you are looking to spend a semester in Japan, as the deadline for application is this Friday January 15th. If you are interested in a study abroad experience in a country other than Japan there is still a little more time to work on the application as the deadline for all other countries is not until February 12th. If you aren’t prepared to apply by the these deadlines it’s never to early to start considering your options for next year as there is usually another chance to apply in the Fall.

There are also opportunities to spend the summer semester abroad which offers the same experience but with a shorter time commitment. A summer semester is also beneficial as it allows students to have a study abroad experience without hindering graduation eligibility or the September-April academic year at Saint Mary's. Summer programs are a great alternative for students whose degree programs do not allow time for a full semester abroad. The deadlines for the summer 2010 semester are also approaching. There is a full list of possible choices on the International Learning website with deadlines of January 22nd, February 1st and February 15th.

Saint Mary’s has a great International Learning Program, with over 30 study programs available at host universities in 18 countries, including France, Mexico, Australia, Taiwan, China, Japan, and Sweden. There is an agreement between many universities and SMU that allows students to pay Saint Mary’s tuition for credits they receive at host Universities. Students are also able to spend a semester at schools that do not have agreements with Saint Mary's although the process is a little more complicated.
Once you have decided where you would like to study the International Activities Office can, in most cases, put you in touch with other SMU students who have spent a semester abroad. This is a great way to get another perspective of what life in that country is really like. This also offers an opportunity to get suggestions or little facts that may help on the trip that you may not be able to find out otherwise; tips such as how the public transit system works, how to save money on living expenses, what to see, what to skip and other information only available from people who have lived the experience.

The International Activities Office is willing to offer lots of help and assistance to anyone considering a semester abroad; if you want more information check out the International Learning link on the SMU website.Language is not a barrier as students can take courses taught in English even in countries where English is not the primary language. Interested students are also not limited by their GPA, as long as you are not on academic probation you are eligible to apply as selection criteria is focused on more than just Academics. It is beneficial for students to have demonstrated an interested in other cultures and be willing to adapt to new environments quickly.
The opportunity to study abroad often works out best when students are in their third year of study, but with planning students may be able to go in other years as well. Graduate students are also eligible for the program.

Once you have selected a destination and a list of possible courses it is important to meet with an academic advisor to find out how, or if, your courses will transfer back as SMU credits. Depending on the marking schemes at host universities it may actually be better if the marks don’t transfer back. Saint Mary’s does however award credit for courses on a pass/fail basis without giving it a specific letter grade.

In addition to the tuition swap program there are plenty of grants, scholarships, and bursaries available to students once they are accepted into the program. With a strong commitment, budgeting, funding, and a plan studying abroad can be affordable for nearly all students making it worthwhile to consider the opportunity no matter what your financial situation may be. The cost of living in most areas is comparable to that of Canada with additional expenses for airfare, insurance, and initial set-up.
Also, there are often departmental Field Study opportunities which allow students and professors to travel for research purposes for a week or two. These trips allow students a chance for a hands-on approach to classroom material, as well as the opportunity to gain new experiences. For instance, during the February reading break a group of Saint Mary's students will travel to Northern Ireland with the Conflict Resolution Society to lead workshops with children in schools there.

If none of these programs are for you there are still many international learning opportunities right here on campus. Join a society, enrol in a language course, or attend an on campus event that is focused on a culture other than your own, or just engage others in conversation, you never know what you might learn. International Week will be kicking off soon and will provide many opportunities to learn about a variety of cultures through activities, presentations and meet and greets.

Dozens of flights delayed

DOZENS OF flights to and from Irish airports were cancelled or delayed yesterday due to snow in the UK.At one stage yesterday, the runways at London Gatwick, Birmingham, London City and Cardiff airports were all closed. The main cancellations in Ireland were caused by the closure of the runway at London Gatwick airport which serves flights to and from Cork, Knock, Dublin and Shannon. Gatwick did not open until about 5pm with some 10 Irish flights cancelled.

Although London’s Heathrow airport remained open, there were some weather related cancellations, including at least three Aer Lingus flights from the airport. There were also cancellations of some flights in and out of Ireland West Knock Airport yesterday.Three Ryanair flights from the UK to Knock were diverted to Shannon and one Aer Arann flight from Dublin to Knock was cancelled.

Paramount Airways to add 500 flights per month

MUMBAI: With a revival in domestic air traffic numbers, Paramount Airways, the all business class airline, has added around 200 flights to itsnetwork in the past two months. It has set a target of 2,500 flights per month by the end of the current fiscal from the current level of 2,000. The proposed capacity addition would take place through adding more aircraft to its fleet and increasing the number of seats.

Paramount Airways managing director M Thyagrajan told ET We will connect more metros to smaller cities over the next two months. Starting February, the airline will take a dozen turboprops planes on lease, which will have capacity of around 75 seats each. This will be to cater to smaller cities across the country. The aircraft purchase will be financed by loans from either Exim Bank or European Central Bank. Currently, Paramount has a fleet of five Embraer aircraft.

These turboprop planes will fly to destinations in Jharkhand and Meghalaya, apart from Cooch Behar in West Bengal. Destinations in the south like Pondicherry, Mysore, Salem, Bellary will also be catered to. Eventually, Paramount expects to cover 40 destinations by 2011 from 17 destinations today in the country.

Analysts say the stability in ATF prices, which constitute about a half of an airline’s operational expenses, and a gradual turnaround in domestic traffic have been triggers for Paramount to increase capacity. Domestic aviation traffic has grown 7.8% in 2009 to 4.45 crore passengers compared to what it was a year ago.

students received scholarships to study abroad in 2010

Katie Rozwadowski of Stanley was among seven University of Wisconsin Eau Claire students who received scholarships to study abroad in 2010 through the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program. Rozwadowski was awarded $3,500 to attend the University of Limerick in Ireland.Rozwadowski, a biology major, was attracted to Ireland for its beauty, Celtic culture and the core of science classes at the University of Limerick. Plus, I love rain, she said.

Rozwadowski hopes to encourage students to make time to study abroad and to demonstrate how the Gilman Scholarship can help. She’ll give presentations at the first biology and chemistry club meetings of the 2011 fall semester. One reason I have been chosen for this scholarship is because students with science majors are severely underrepresented in study abroad programs, said Rozwadowski. With careful planning it can be done and you can still graduate in four years. There was a record number of applicants and grantees this spring, said Cheryl Lochner-Wright, study abroad coordinator in the Center for International Education at UW-Eau Claire. She attributes this to a concerted effort by the study abroad staff and the university’s Financial Aid office to spread the word about the scholarships.

“Current economic realities are making it even more difficult for students with high financial need to consider studying abroad, said Lochner Wright. We hope the success of these students will encourage others to plan study abroad into their academic careers. The Gilman International Scholarship Program, established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000, provides awards that allow American undergraduate students who receive federal Pell Grant funding at a two year or four year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide.
