Lufthansa’s daily flight between Calgary and Frankfurt will remain cancelled at least until Tuesday this week, says a spokesperson with the German airline.A strike by Lufthansa’s pilots over job security grounded hundreds of flights on Monday, causing travel chaos and leaving thousands of passengers around the world stranded.Although the labour dispute was resolved Monday afternoon, Lufthansa’s intercontinental flights could remain disrupted until Friday.
We do expect still to have a continuous adjustment in the schedule, said airline spokeswoman Jennifer Janzen. The flights between Calgary and Frankfurt are especially busy this week as some people visiting the Vancouver Olympics had planned to return to Europe from Calgary, she said.We had a lot of passengers booked on the Calgary flights, and we’re doing everything to rebook them accordingly, Janzen said, noting that Lufthansa is trying to book passengers stranded in Calgary on flights with Air Canada or KLM.
Lufthansa publishes a daily flight schedule on its website the schedule is also published on the Calgary International Airport’s website. Janzen said passengers booked on Lufthansa flights between Calgary and Frankfurt should check the list to see if their flights are scheduled. The Lufthansa strike grounded about 900 flights on Monday, just as rival British Airways’ cabin crew voted to join the fray to protest harsh cost cuts.British Airways wants three-quarters of its crew to accept a pay freeze this year, and for 3,000 full-time staffers to switch to part-time, along with a reduction in on-board crew levels from 15 to 14 on long haul flights from London’s Heathrow airport.
BA cabin crew staffers voted in favour of a strike to protest the cost cuts, the second attempt at job action after a court forced the workers to abandon plans for a 12-day strike over Christmas that would have left one million travellers stranded. The labour union Unite said no dates for the work stoppage had been set, but reiterated that crew would not strike over the Easter holiday at the beginning of April.British Airways said the decision to strike was completely unjustified and vowed that it would not allow Unite to ruin this company.Adding to the upheaval, French air traffic controllers plan go on strike for five days starting Tuesday to protest Europe’s single sky air traffic management policy, causing flight cancellations at the Orly and Charles de Gaulle airports in Paris.
