Study abroad programs have increased in recent years

According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, more institutions are taking a systemic approach to prepare professors to lead students overseas.Although faculty led study abroad programs have increased in recent years, institutions have discovered that many professors lack the knowledge and administrative skills to manage a successful overseas trip.

Murray State University now requires training for faculty members leading study abroad trips. The program provides assistance for instructors when drafting course curriculums, making travel arrangements and recruiting students.Worcester Polytechnic Institute created a daylong retreat where professors serving as advisers on international programs examine case studies of incidents that occurred on previous trips. At Eastern Illinois University, first-time study abroad professors are paired with experienced faculty leaders as mentors.
