The airport loses Detroit, Boston flights

Charlottetown Airport will have two daily Delta flights to Detroit and Boston grounded this summer as a result of the merger between Delta and Northwest Airlines.Doug Newson, the airport's chief executive officer, said the loss of the Boston and Detroit flights is disappointing.
There's been a lot of changes with the merger there, and it's no secret that the U.S. travel was down last year, Newson said.Newson said the two U.S. airlines have made changes at other regional airports as well, in the wake of their 2008 merger. So it's not just a P.E.I. thing. I think they really changed their strategy in that market when it comes to regional jets, he said. And as a small airport, you're kind of affected by that.

P.E.I. residents looking for international travel options won't be totally disappointed this summer. A new daily flight from Charlottetown to New York City is to begin in mid-June.We're hoping that the New York flight will be a popular one, Newson said. And another domestic flight will be added to the departure list in Charlottetown.A second Air Canada flight to Ottawa begins May 1 and will last until Oct. 30.
