The FAA plans funding to an Owensboro Daviess County Regional Airport runway project that will move power lines so flights can be added to Las Vegas. But it's going to take a while to get that money, so the airport is asking the city to front the money in the meantime.Airport officials say it could take up to a year for money to come from the FAA so it will ask the city commission for an advance of $400,000 in the meantime.

Airport officials hope the advanced money will get the ball rolling for flights to Las Vegas starting next year. While the flights to Las Vegas might be attractive for some flyers, airport officials say they've wanted to finish it since it's part of an eighteen million dollar project that started fifteen years ago.The airport will have to acquire farmland from two property owners using eminent domain to move some power lines back to use the full 8,000 foot runway.Local leaders say the project opens the door to not just more commercial flights but also lucrative cargo flights and military planes used by the National Guard Armory.

City Manager Bill Parrish says, It just gives you potential you just don't have now. Without that expansion we can't go out and raise our hand and volunteer for projects and jobs and companies to come here. With that we have opportunities that are unlimited. In the past two years the airport has gone from having no commercial flights to adding flights to Orlando, Nashville and Atlanta.Airport officials say flights to Las Vegas can help put Owensboro on the map.The City Commission will vote whether or not to give the advance money Tuesday night at City Hall.
