Singapore’s national carrier has announced that it will soon be reducing the amount of flights between Singapore and Los Angeles. The announcement came via Singapore Airlines’ spokesman, Nicholas Ionides, who told AFP reporters on Wednesday that the carrier’s current rate of seven flights from per week would be reduced to five. He said that the move comes as a result of weakening demand.
Tuesday and Wednesday direct flights between the carrier’s global hub and Los Angeles will be cut beginning on the 3rd of May. Mr Ionides said that these days often had lower demand than the other five weekly flights. The airline uses its Airbus A345 models for the route.Reporters followed up by asking Ionides if the cuts came as a result of rising costs of jet fuel, however he responded by saying that it comes solely as a result of bringing supply to the current level of demand. However, he added that the carrier was indeed feeling the pressure of skyrocketing fuel costs by saying that all airlines were being affected and that Singapore Airlines was no exception. The price of crude exceeded $100 per barrel on the Brent index in February and the West Texas Intermediate in March and in the past few weeks has reached the highest level seen in more than 30 months.
