EgyptAir is planning to bring its operations back to normal from Mumbai to Cairo by the year end as the country is returning to normalcy, according to a Times of India report by Somit Sen. Egypt in turmoil since the revolution in February 2011 has a high tourism potential and attracts about 12 million visitors every year from across the world for its famous pyramids, museums, ancient temples and warm beaches. Hussein Massoud, Chairman and CEO, EgyptAir Holding Company said, We are in the process of restoring our country's image and attracting tourists back to our soil.
The political turmoil had a direct impact on flight operations, especially to India, but Egypt's national carrier is very optimistic. At present, it operates three flights from Mumbai to Cairo and this could be doubled by the year's end.Massoud added that strategies were being planned to increase passenger volumes. This includes inviting delegations from different countries. We had an Italian delegation some weeks ago, followed by Swiss, Turkish and Spanish delegations of tour operators,Massoud said. Massoud also invited a delegation from India recently to tour the country and witness the Egypt is Safe campaign launched by young Egyptians.
EgyptAir has nine subsidiaries and last year, its overall profit was around $100 million, Massoud said. The airline has 75 aircraft in its fleet. On what EgyptAir is doing about the traveller who could be wary of the situation in the adjoining Libya, Massoud said,We are talking to tour operators and as a member of Star Alliance, we are getting our message across to other airlines.
Massoud said,In the short term, the revolution might cause some damage, with everyone expressing his/her own opinion, with us not knowing where we are. But in the long term, we will have a democracy in Egypt. We will be safer and so would be our tourists.
