Passengers flights on Qantas and Jetstar face another frustrating day today as both airlines have cancelled flights to and from New Zealand because of ash from the Chilean volcano. It is the second day the services have been suspended. No international or domestic Qantas or Jetstar flights will operate from New Zealand airports today. This morning the airlines will decide whether to suspend services tomorrow.
Qantas said the volcanic ash from the Mount Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano in Chile was causing flight disruptions, and because safety was the airline's priority it had cancelled or rerouted numerous flights to avoid the ash cloud. No domestic flights in Australia have been affected.Flights to Johannesburg, South Africa, will fly via Perth today and tomorrow, an airline spokeswoman said. Flights in the opposite direction will not be affected.Jetstar and Qantas both said they would offer refunds to passengers affected by the cancelled flights. Both airlines said they would offer accommodation where necessary. On Friday Jetstar said the cost of keeping aircraft on the ground was at least $NZ10 million.
