With India emerging as one of its top five markets and with expectations of moving up further, Singapore Airlines is increasing the number of flights from India. Singapore Airlines, along with its regional wing SilkAir, will now operate a total of seven round trip services every week, marking the beginning of daily services from Kolkata.
Earlier, on October 1 last year, the airline had introduced a four-times-a-week A330 flight between Kolkata and Singapore. This is now being brought down to three weekly flights while introducing SilkAir flights on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. SilkAir already has flights to Hyderabad, Kochi, Chennai and Bangalore. Singapore Airlines has already announced a decision to introduce a low-cost airline sometime next year to service long-haul and medium-haul routes like India. The fare for SilkAir flights, which will be full-service flights, is likely to be 15-20 per cent lower than that of Singapore Airlines given the latter's positioning as a premier airline.
GM Toh, GM-India, Singapore Airlines, who led a delegation of company officials to the new West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, later said,With the launch of SilkAir’s flights to Kolkata, we’ll together operate daily flights, providing our customers more choices and convenience. Our decision was fuelled by the fact that Kolkata is the main business, commercial and financial hub of eastern India.SA has already replaced its fleet of Boeing 777 aircraft with A330 aircraft globally including India with its focus on cabin enhancement, better seats and an improved travel experience.
