Delta begins flights to New York

More Western New Yorkers will be able to flights to New York City each day beginning in March, when Delta begins an all-jet service with six daily flights from Buffalo Niagara International Airport to La- Guardia. It will give the airport added seat capacity, said C. Douglas Hartmayer, spokesman for the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority. “We’ll get 170 more seats each day once the transition takes place, so that’s a good thing.Nationwide, Delta is adding flights that could carry as many as four million more passengers annually flying out of La- Guardia by next summer, without increasing congestion because of its use of the larger jets.

Tickets go on sale today for the new service, which will start March 25. Plans for the larger aircraft were revealed Friday in New York where Delta announced its new LaGuardia hub. The airline is making a $100 million investment to expand the main terminal at La- Guardia and to operate more than 100 new flights serving 29 new destinations.Delta’s expansion in New York is accompanied by a reduction in flights in Washington, D.C. The airline struck a deal with US Airways to boost its flights from LaGuardia by trading some of its flying rights at Washington’s Reagan National Airport for slots at LaGuardia.

The swap included Delta’s takeover of US Airways’ upstate routes. US Airways will detail its Washington service in January.Upstate New York is getting enhanced service as a result of this expansion as well, from both Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse to LaGuardia, said Gail Grimmett, Delta’s senior vice president for New York, adding that the upstate communities worked feverishly to make the expansion a reality.Delta will replace the turboprop aircraft operated by US Airways with the larger jets. We’re certainly pleased. It shows Delta has confidence in the Buffalo market, and that’s good news, Hartmayer said.Grimmett said the airline also is focused on community issues and will continue its involvement with Innovate Buffalo and other upstate organizations.
