The first ten projects to receive Scottish Government funding to send university students overseas have been announced.Education secretary Michael Russell revealed that £115,000 would be split between 10 projects run by eight Scottish Universities as part of the Saltire Scholarship programme.Areas of study to be covered include health, agriculture, science and engineering in countries such as China, India, the United States and Canada.Mr Russell said: "Our Saltire Scholarship scheme, designed to encourage students to study in Scotland has gone from strength to strength. I've heard students from overseas speaking very highly of the experience they've had and the skills they've gained from studying in Scotland.I want to extend these opportunities and for the first time, Scottish students will be able to reap the rewards of living and studying overseas.Robin Parker, president of NUS Scotland said: As clearly demonstrated in our research report, Developing Scotland's Graduates for the Global Society, study abroad not only makes for a fantastic learning experience, it makes students more employable as well.
NUS Scotland's Scotland Goes Global project is working to make sure that students learn about study abroad options such as these.The Scottish Government-funded Saltire Scholarships will result in even more students in Scotland taking the exciting step of broadening their educational horizons through study abroad.The institutions to have been awarded funding are the Scottish Agricultural College, Edinburgh Napier University, Heriot-Watt University, Glasgow Caledonian University, the University of the West of Scotland, University of Stirling the University of Aberdeen and the University of Edinburgh.
