The federal government is planning an overhaul of the $15.5 billion international education industry following months of violent attacks against students and allegations of corruption.
Education Minister Julia Gillard will announce a plan to rescue the industry, including laws governing student visas, on Saturday, Fairfax Media reports.
A stream of violent incidents against Indian students covered by the media in recent months has been particularly damaging, with 80,000-plus Indian students currently studying in Australia.
The government believes it is important to ensure that we maintain and enhance our hard won international reputation as a premium destination for international students, Ms Gillard is quoted as saying by the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday.
