University of Iowa to develop a new study abroad program in Tanzania

A $250,000 U.S. State Department grant will allow the University of Iowa to develop a new study abroad program in Tanzania. It is the first semester long UI program in eastern Africa, according to a UI news release.Janis Perkins, the International Programs assistant dean for Study Abroad, said the new program will fill a gap in study abroad offerings as Swahili and East African Studies programs flourish at the UI.

A primary objective of this grant is to create more diverse geographic locations for our students to study abroad as interest in study abroad grows, she said in the release. The UI will match the State Department grant with an additional $139,000.Though this is the first program of its kind, UI students have been able to study in other African nations through exchange programs as well as travel for short term programs in Tanzania.
