Study abroad in Australia

While a study abroad site in Sydney, Australia, may evoke images of beaches and sunshine, NYU administrators are pitching it as something more.Ulrich Baer, NYU's vice provost for globalization and multicultural affairs, described the city not only as beautiful, but also as a cultural melting pot.He said students will learn about indigenous history and culture and travel to aborigine-owned land to study with the local population. Environmental studies classes will also focus heavily on Australian conservation and put emphasis on Australian landmarks like the Great Barrier Reef. You will never be as far away from New York City in your life, Baer said. It is a unique experience that is not something you can do even as a tourist. He added:I see this program as being very successful because a few polls were done and Australia was the most popular among students.

University of Southern California also has study abroad sites in Australia, and according to USC overseas studies adviser Trista Bearwhere, the program is a desirable destination among her students. Most students are very much drawn to European cities, so going to Australia or New Zealand is off the beaten path, she said.It is very popular. It's also a very comfortable transition because there is no language barrier.Steve Kirk, a Melbourne student attending the Swinburne Institute of Technology, encourages other students to travel abroad.Australia is a great place to live and study, he said. There's something for everyone, from shopping to great food.
