Israeli airline resumed flights to Egyptian capital after a five-month suspension

The Israeli airline El Al resumed on Friday its flights to the Egyptian capital after a five-month suspension following a popular revolt that forced long-standing president Hosni Mubarak to step down, according to sources at the Cairo airport. They said that the first flight from Tel Aviv landed at Cairo airport early Friday with 11 passengers aboard.

A Tel Aviv-bound flight carrying 14 was operated later in the day, they added. The airline has been flights to Cairo since Egypt became the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel in 1979. In late 2010, El Al reduced its flights to the Egyptian capital to two instead of four per week due to a drop in the passenger traffic.Though the numbers of passengers is still low, the carrier insisted on resuming its operation on political grounds after this long period of suspension, added the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to talk to the media.El Al said it had to suspend its flights to and from Cairo following the Egyptian revolution due to a decrease in numbers of passengers.
