At Memphis International Airport, an almost army of snow plows roll out to clear the runways of the wintry weather that's crippled airline flights.Larry Cox is the president and CEO of the Memphis Shelby County Airport Authority. Cox said, Normally we don't have this. Some of the airlines don't have as much de-icing equipment and they do delay or cancel flights, but not to the extent we're seeing today.
A winter storm has de-icing crews in overdrive trying to keep up with the snow and ice.Cox said, When the airplanes get delayed at an airport for de-icing of an airplane it can throw the airplane and crews out of schedule and mess up our whole system.Inside the terminal, the arrival and departure board shows the cancellation of almost 200 flights.Cory Kirchoff and Brandie Kellin were trying to get back home to Wisconsin. Kirchoff said, We were on our way to the cities after working down south for two weeks from up north and got locked up in the ice storm here. So, we'll have to go back to the hotel and chill for a while.
Kellin had some reservations about flying. Kellin said, It's my first time flying, too. On the way down here I flew I was pretty nervous. It was raining and icy. So I was scared to fly. I'm kind of happy we're not flying. But not flying will mean Kellin and others will have to wait for the weather to improve and also wait before they're reunited with their families.Kellin said, Pretty depressing. We've been gone for two weeks. We have children and we're ready to see them and its kind of sad and I just miss my babies so bad. It's recommended that if you are scheduled to fly Friday night or Saturday to first check with your airline either online or by phone to make sure your flight hasn't been cancelled.
