Four Miami University students received Gilman Scholarships for study abroad

More than 800 Gilman Scholarships were awarded to U.S. students for study abroad in spring 2011. Miami student recipients are:Four Miami University students received the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad during spring 2011. The scholarship program aims to diversify the kinds of students who study abroad by supporting U.S. undergraduate students who are receiving federal Pell Grant funding; the program also aims to diversify the countries and regions where students go to study abroad.

Hannah Bambrick, sophomore marketing major from Akron, $4,500 for study in Luxembourg Miami’s Luxembourg Program ;Courtney Day, junior journalism major from Fairlawn, $4,500 for study in India Miami’s India Semester Program.Shannon Phillips, junior interdisciplinary business management major from East Cleveland, $3,500 for study in Australia; andKarmen Stoyadinovic, sophomore accountancy major from Lakewood, $4,500 for study in India Miami’s India Semester Program.Currently, six Miami students are studying abroad after receiving fall 2010 Gilman scholarships. study abroad in Germany.Those students are:

Rikki Daugherty, a sophomore business economics major from Maple Heights, received $3,000 for study in South Korea;Iya Dombrovskaya, junior East Asian languages and culture and music double major from Kirtland, $5,000 for study in Japan;Susan Hewitt, senior Russian, East European and Eurasian studies major from Pickerington, $3,500 for study in Russia;Christopher Nemastil, senior management and organizations and international studies double major from Gates Mills, $5,000 for study in South Korea;Sarah Sterner, senior international studies and environmental principles and practices co-major from Cincinnati, $4,000 for study in Jordan; and Jennifer Veng, sophomore international studies major from Liberty Township, $3,000 for study in South Korea.

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, now in its tenth year, aims to broaden the student population that studies abroad by supporting undergraduates who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. The program also supports students studying in non-traditional countries, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand, and students with diverse ethnic backgrounds. It is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and is administered by the Institute of International Education.
