Flights restart at Auckland Airport

Normal operations have resumed at Auckland Airport after persistent fog across Auckland and Hamilton disrupted air passengers this morning.Auckland Airport senior communication manager Richard Llewellyn said low visibility procedures have now been lifted and flights will resume as normal.The process of clearing any backlog of flights has begun, but please note some other airports around the country are still affected by fog," Llewellyn said.At 9am, six domestic departures were cancelled and two delayed, while eight domestic arrivals were cancelled and three delayed. The domestic flights were mainly to or from regional destinations.

At least eight flights leaving from Hamilton Airport were cancelled.Minor fog delayed some domestic flights from Christchurch Airport, but flights are currently up and running.Airlines have already put on extra planes to clear a backlog of passengers created yesterday after more than 50 flights were cancelled.Despite international jet services being able to operate in the conditions, two flights departing for Sydney from Auckland were cancelled this morning.As of 8am today, however, most international flights have been able to take off from Auckland Airport.Three flights departing from Brisbane to Auckland have been rescheduled.One Air New Zealand flight departing from Nadi to Auckland has been cancelled.

For more on the latest regional arrivals and departures click here.MetService says that fog is visible over much of the Waikato and the Hauraki Plains up to Auckland Meteorologist Dan Corbett told TV ONE's Breakfast that the fog is expect to clear later this morning.He said that the "very calm winds, calm conditions and the moisture" currently being experienced in Auckland are the "perfect recipe for the fog.It melted away slowly but it did linger around the Manukau harbour and across some spots in Waikato. It has reformed over many areas this morning, but it's not going to be as extensive and not as thick as yesterday morning.Corbett says the big difference with the fog this morning is that, "we are seeing this low, slightly ease its way further east, putting a slight southerly drift on things over the Waikato and eventually across Auckland which will help stir it up.Cloud and areas of fog cover much of the south and east of the South Island from Kaikoura south.Police have reminded motorists to be cautious of black ice, particularly as frost persists in the South Island.
