Study abroad program in Vietnam

Students leave with practical and everyday understandings of a country and a people, wrote Higgins via e-mail, adding that service learning and the roommate option have the biggest impact on experiencing day to day life.Higgins was the program director for a Washington, D.C.-based organization’s study abroad program in Vietnam for three years before joining Loyola in July 2009. As a result, he has been able to see the country’s development firsthand. Though he said Vietnam is showing increased global integration, improved freedoms in daily life and rapid economic growth, he also said that the country faces struggles with growing inequality and environmental degradation; however, he is confident the students studying abroad in the country will have a rich experience.

Living in Vietnam can be challenging at times for foreigners, but not so much that students feel overwhelmed, wrote Higgins. Ho Chi Minh City offers a wide range of the unknown for students to explore, while also providing opportunities for the familiar.Linda Ho and Wendy Tran, both seniors, were able to travel to Vietnam for six weeks last summer as part of Loyola’s pilot program. Both Vietnamese Americans, they were grateful for the opportunity to explore the country where their families had been raised. It was my opportunity to see where my parents grew up, said Ho, 22, a psychology major.

Vietnam is more than just war. When I think of Vietnam, I think of culture, food and my family back home.Freshman Catie Vernon was happy Loyola had initiated the program, but said she has plans to study in Europe instead. It’s a good step to take to have that available for people, said the political science major, but I think it would be really hard to adapt to their language and culture. I honestly don’t know that much about Vietnam besides the war. Both Ho and Tran are quick to promote the county.

The spirit of the Vietnamese people is just so infectious, said Tran, also a psychology major. It’s different than Europe, but why not force yourself to be in a challenging environment where you have peers who are experiencing the same thing? Ho said.Another plus for many students is the relatively low cost of the program. It’s low-cost but big adventure, said Day. It’s one of the least expensive ways to study abroad but one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever have.Freshman English and theatre major, Chris Thoren is already toying with the option of spending a semester in Vietnam. In America, Vietnam has been so demonized because of the war, and the American perspective on it doesn’t do the country justice, said the theater and English major. It would provide a perspective that history books can’t and one that you can’t gain in an American classroom. There’s no simulation for going to Vietnam.

Financial aid to study abroad

However, no one is currently feeling those effects more than Denison students planning to study abroad, particularly international students. On Feb. 1, Vice President of Finance and Management Seth Patton released a letter explaining Denison's need based funding for off campus study will no longer be made available for international students.

Specifically, the letter stated, Providing an international study opportunity to students of need is primary to our financial aid commitment to off campus study programs. Because this opportunity is effectively already being fulfilled for international students through their four year program on the Denison campus, international students no longer will be eligible to receive Denison funding for an off-campus study program in addition to their Denison experience.

The change is permanent and affects all international students who wish to study abroad in the future. The financial sector of President Dale Knobel's senior staff made the decision. This evaluation was made solely out of need, said Patton, a member of the staff. Five years ago it was costing Denison $370,000 a year to run the study abroad program, and in these five years it's gone from $370,000 to $613,000. The price is taking off. Prices were projected to be even higher this year, possibly topping $700,000.

However, the policy was decided solely by the senior staff and included neither a debate nor a vote. The exclusivity of the decision has enraged some staff members.Sarah Leavell, Senior Associate Director of Admissions, said, I do realize the economic constraints we are under, although I am confused as to why something holding this much importance was passed so abruptly.Leavell thought there could have been a better way to handle this.In the admissions office, and especially in the senior staff, we analyze data all the time. We are constantly looking at projection sheets, plans and data. I don't understand why the school was so surprised at the increase in cost of the study abroad program, she added.

Lufthansa Increase more Flights

Deutsche Lufthansa AG LHA.XE said Tuesday it will add 400 additional flights to its flight plan Wednesday and expects a normalization of flight schedules by Friday at the latest, after a German labor court ordered striking German pilots and Lufthansa to return the negotiating table late Monday. The air carrier said while normally 1,800 flights would operate daily, for Wednesday some 1,400 flights are scheduled, adding that more information on further flights to be added for Thursday will be available on the airline's Web site Tuesday evening.

On Monday, around 4,500 pilots went on strike, grounding between 800 and 900 flights and affecting thousands of travelers. However, late Monday a Frankfurt labor court called on the German pilots union Vereinigung Cockpit to suspend the strike until March 8 and return to the negotiating table with Lufthansa.

Flights to Paris

Medium and short-haul flights from Paris are expected to be disrupted on Wednesday, when a strike by air traffic controllers goes into its second day, aviation authorities said on Tuesday. The DGAC civil aviation authority said it had asked operators to cancel 25 percent of flights from Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport and half the flights from Paris-Orly airport.

National carrier Air France said it expected to operate 100 percent of its long-haul services but only 75 percent of domestic and European flights from Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport and 50 percent from Paris-Orly airport.Unions called a five-day strike starting on Tuesday to protest against an accord on modernising air traffic control, signed by Germany, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Switzerland. Unions fear the reforms will lead to layoffs.

Flights are expected to be disrupted until Saturday morning.Families with children waiting at the Paris airports for information about flight cancellations expressed anger, saying on television that they were being held hostage by the labour dispute.French unions are also protesting against budget cuts expected in 2010 and 2011 as part of a broader government effort to reduce spending.

Flights will add Canadian jobs

Emirates Airline, which is seeking approval to increase its flights to Canada, said added links will create more than 2,800 new jobs. The Dubai-based airline said a new study presented in Vancouver on Tuesday by transport consultants InterVISTAS found its plan for new services to Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary would also bring $480 million in economic benefits.

This study identifies a great economic opportunity and highlights the need for more progress on Open Skies agreements to remove barriers to international tourism and commerce, said British Colombia Premier Gordon Campbell in a statement. As a province and a country, we need to capitalize on services like those offered by Emirates Airline to realize our full economic potential.

The research looked at potential benefits from tourism spending, taxes and economic activity from Emirates’ proposed services. The airline is the world’s third most profitable and flies to 101 destinations around the world.New links would result in 274,927 new passengers travelling through Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver airports annually. There would be an additional $246 million in new spin-off economic activity across Canada annually and $38.1 million in new tax revenue, the study said. The study points out that demand for cargo space for Canadian goods on Emirates flights currently exceeds capacity, with space sold out months in advance.

Flights between Taipei and Shanghai

President Ma Ying-jeou said on Monday that direct flights between Taipei Sonshan Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao Airport will start in October. The direct flights will start from four flights a week and may increase in the future. The current direct flights between Taipei and Shanghai are to and from Shanghai International Pudong Airport, which is further from Shanghai city center than Hongqiao Airport.

At the Chinese New Year gathering of Taiwan's Straits Exchange Foundation, Ma said there were agreements between Taiwan and Japan, South Korea and China to increase international flights between the nations. However, the plans were delayed because Japan and South Korea were worried about offending Mainland China. As the relationship between Taiwan and China had improved, there will be direct flights from Taipei Sonshan Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao Airport and Tokyo Haneda Airport in October. The government is still negotiating with South Korea.

APSU's study-abroad programs

Tenn. Jess Nobert, an Austin Peay State University student studying abroad in Sweden, misses a lot of things about home her car, ranch dressing and warm weather. But it's a good experience because there are a lot of new things here that I probably won't find when I get back, she said.
Nobert is one of several students participating in APSU's study-abroad programs this spring.
Tina Rousselot de Saint Ceran, coordinator of International Education at APSU, said more and more students like Nobert are studying abroad or taking advantage of exchange programs.

To date for the 2009 10 programs, we have doubled our enrollment numbers in study abroad and exchange programs since last year this time, she said.Enrollment in study abroad fall and winter programs increased by 118 percent from the 2008-09 academic year. In 2008-09, APSU experienced a 26 percent increase in study-abroad enrollment numbers from the previous academic year, due to the addition of two short-term study-abroad opportunities in Japan and Russia and two new partner institution exchanges in South Korea and Austria.APSU also was the university with the greatest enrollment in the Cooperative Center for Study Abroad (CCSA) winter program, topping 15 other partner institutions in the consortium.

Study-abroad students experience opportunities that simply cannot be found at APSU. Nobert, for instance, met Matthew Barzun, U.S. ambassador to Sweden, at Mid Sweden University, where she is attending. He came to speak to the campus about answering Obama's call but ended up speaking about the Haiti situation instead, she said. He talked about what the U.S. was doing there at the time. It was interesting because students from the university, Swedes and other foreign students were asking him very tough questions we wouldn't expect to hear at APSU.

Nobert said she continues to acclimate herself to being in a different country, surrounded by new cultures.I've had the opportunity to go to a few sporting events. I really hate that I'm missing APSU basketball season. The university doesn't have organized collegiate sports; everyone who plays is either for fun or professional, she said. There are hockey and basketball teams in our town, Sundsvall, and there is a hockey team from the Swedish Elite League only a few miles up the road in Timr.

Flights are cancelled

Lufthansa’s daily flight between Calgary and Frankfurt will remain cancelled at least until Tuesday this week, says a spokesperson with the German airline.A strike by Lufthansa’s pilots over job security grounded hundreds of flights on Monday, causing travel chaos and leaving thousands of passengers around the world stranded.Although the labour dispute was resolved Monday afternoon, Lufthansa’s intercontinental flights could remain disrupted until Friday.

We do expect still to have a continuous adjustment in the schedule, said airline spokeswoman Jennifer Janzen. The flights between Calgary and Frankfurt are especially busy this week as some people visiting the Vancouver Olympics had planned to return to Europe from Calgary, she said.We had a lot of passengers booked on the Calgary flights, and we’re doing everything to rebook them accordingly, Janzen said, noting that Lufthansa is trying to book passengers stranded in Calgary on flights with Air Canada or KLM.

Lufthansa publishes a daily flight schedule on its website the schedule is also published on the Calgary International Airport’s website. Janzen said passengers booked on Lufthansa flights between Calgary and Frankfurt should check the list to see if their flights are scheduled. The Lufthansa strike grounded about 900 flights on Monday, just as rival British Airways’ cabin crew voted to join the fray to protest harsh cost cuts.British Airways wants three-quarters of its crew to accept a pay freeze this year, and for 3,000 full-time staffers to switch to part-time, along with a reduction in on-board crew levels from 15 to 14 on long haul flights from London’s Heathrow airport.

BA cabin crew staffers voted in favour of a strike to protest the cost cuts, the second attempt at job action after a court forced the workers to abandon plans for a 12-day strike over Christmas that would have left one million travellers stranded. The labour union Unite said no dates for the work stoppage had been set, but reiterated that crew would not strike over the Easter holiday at the beginning of April.British Airways said the decision to strike was completely unjustified and vowed that it would not allow Unite to ruin this company.Adding to the upheaval, French air traffic controllers plan go on strike for five days starting Tuesday to protest Europe’s single sky air traffic management policy, causing flight cancellations at the Orly and Charles de Gaulle airports in Paris.

Study Abroad and Experiencing American culture

Culture shock was the phrase I heard the most before I left the country to study abroad. When I finally arrived here in London, the most shocking thing to me wasn't the different culture; it was how much of the culture I recognized.I was prepared for differences: different manners, different money, different food, different politics. I wasn't prepared for the slew of American imports.

When I turn on the television I see American programs like the The Simpsons and Glee. When I go dancing, I hear not only Lady Gaga and Jay Z, but Journey, too and everyone knows the words to Don't Stop Believin. When I open the newspaper there is in depth coverage of American politics and affairs.I am regularly surprised by how pervasive American media is over here. It just didn't occur to me that the people here would consume so much of the same television, music, and news that I do in America. Now, this is not meant to imply that British culture follows the United States', importing the pop culture and adopting similar policies, because that is not true. Britain is complex, unique and very proud. America is both praised and censured by the Brits, and I have already embarrassed myself thanks to cultural misunderstandings.

That said, I never realized how close the relationship is between Britain and the United States. I also never quite realized the kind of power and influence America wields, politically and culturally.I have become hyper aware of being American, not only because I give myself away the minute I open my mouth, but because everyone here seems to pay closer attention to my country than I do theirs. Before I came here I knew nothing about British Prime Minister Gordon Brown besides his name. Here, I have found entire sections of the newspaper dedicated to covering American politics. Coverage of the Haiti earthquake focused largely on what the United States had done to provide relief and what they should be held responsible for doing.

Hollywood is also inescapable. American movies are on television and in the movie theaters here. Watching television is a similar experience: all the big American dramas are broadcast on British television. Top 40 radio sounds just the same here as in the United States, and Rupert Murdoch is causing trouble with the competition here, too.I get different reactions from people when they find out I am American, ranging from overwhelmingly positive to lukewarm or even wary. It makes me wonder how all this American media shapes their opinion of me. I have my own stereotypes, but they are founded on little more than Monty Python, Harry Potter, and the occasional BBC costume drama.

There is no denying that the United States owes a lot to Great Britain. However, I've had to face up to the fact that I live in what is still the most powerful country in the world, despite anxious rhetoric in America about the decline of U.S. power in the face of globalization and the rise of India and China. It is an unsettling realization for me personally. I never imagined that seeing an episode of Friends could make me feel this disconcerted, but context is everything, I suppose. I had anticipated that studying abroad would teach me about a new country, but I never realized I would learn something new about mine, too.

American Airlines add flights in New York

American Airlines announced today that it will expand its international presence in New York this spring with three new routes between John F. Kennedy International Airport JFK and San Jose, Costa Rica; Madrid, Spain; and Manchester, England. The new flights to San Jose will begin on April 6, while service to Madrid will start on May 1, and flights to Manchester will begin on May 13.The enhanced schedule brings the number of international destinations American serves from New York to 31 nine cities in Europe; 18 destinations in the Atlantic, Caribbean and Latin American regions; three in Canada; and American's daily nonstop flight to Tokyo. Flights to Australia

Cathay Pacific will increase the frequency of flights to Australia and sees opportunities for more partnerships with Qantas, according to Cathay Pacific's chief executive Tony Tyler. We’ve got a great network around Australia. We don’t see many opportunities for adding new points to that network, but we do see opportunities to add frequency, he told Business Spectator in an exclusive interview.

On potential partnerships with Australia's national carrier, Mr Tyler explained that there is more opportunity for tie ups. They work with someone else to Paris. I’d love to see them work with us instead, he said. And I’m sure there’ll be other opportunities to do that. And we compete like hell on the Australia/Hong Kong sectors and that’s as it should be. We don’t have any antitrust immunity. We’ve never asked for it. We believe we make a very good job of serving the market between us and it’s very competitive and no quarter is given nor expected but beyond Hong Kong there are opportunities to cooperate.

And of course within Australia we feed Qantas. The One World arrangements we have give us very good access to their network within Australia and so we can feed them on the domestic sectors, the Cathay Pacific chief said.Mr Tyler also praised Qantas' dual brand no frills strategy.
On the wider sector, Mr Tyler spoke about the opportunity for international carriers to take stakes in Chinese airlines and said that while the sector is recovering, if there is a double dip, all bets are off.

Flights from Springs to Washington, D.C.

United Express will begin a daily nonstop flight from Colorado Springs to Dulles International Airport near Washington on June 9, fulfilling a longtime goal of local officials, Mark Earle, aviation director of the Colorado Springs Airport, said Monday.Airport officials began discussing the route most recently at an aviation industry conference last fall, Earle said.

But the route has been sought by local officials for more than a decade because of the city’s close military and business ties to the Washington area.Washington becomes the first new nonstop destination added at the Springs airport since Northwest Airlines added Memphis, Tenn., to its local flight schedule for a few months in 2008.Nonstop flights to Washington have not been available since Western Pacific Airlines stopped service there in 1997.

Washington has always been one of our primary targets for air service, Earle said. We are extremely happy. Washington service is terrific. It is a prime target for us because it serves a big part of our economy and it shows that airlines are again planning for growth.SkyWest will operate the route with a 64-seat regional jet aircraft, Earle said.Flight 6591, operated by SkyWest Airlines for United Express, will leave Colorado Springs daily at 8:55 a.m. and arrive in Washington at 2:04 p.m.

Flight 6139, also operated by SkyWest, will leave Dulles daily at 6:55 p.m. and arrive in Colorado Springs at 8:32 p.m.United currently lists a round-trip, economy-class fare of $394 on its Web site for the flight, not including taxes and fees. The new flights are good news, said Mike Boyd, an Evergreen-based aviation industry consultant. But he noted that the 3½-hour trip on a regional jet might be tough for some passengers because those jets are smaller than full-size aircraft. He said the initial once-a-day flight could lead to additional daily flights between the two airports. The new flight will help Experience Colorado Springs, the local convention and visitors bureau, attract more meeting and convention groups to the area, said Chelsy Murphy, the bureau’s public relations manager.

Our largest group business during 2009 was for military reunions and government meetings, Murphy said. "A daily direct flight will certainly help that business. Additional air service always helps the tourism industry, especially when it is nonstop service.United added the flight six weeks after US Airways ended service to Colorado Springs after more than two decades, leaving the airport without nonstop service to Phoenix.Since then, Colorado Springs has had nonstop service to 10 cities. Earle said airport officials are working with other carriers to resume service to Phoenix and also are seeking nonstop service to New York, San Antonio and San Diego as their top priorities. This is fantastic news. Washington is one of the major areas of air service we have been lacking in the community and was at the top of the list, especially considering the large concentration of defense contractors here, said Mike Kazmierski, CEO of the Colorado Springs Regional Economic Development Corp.Flights to Washington have been a recurring area of concern to companies that are considering expanding in Colorado Springs.

Flights to Delhi

BJP MP and city Mayor Balkrishna Shukla today demanded civil aviation minister Praful Patel that suspended flights to Delhi and Mumbai from the city be resumed.Air India has suspended its daily morning and evening flights on Mumbai Vadodara and Delhi-Vadodara route since the

The government air carrier now operates only evening flight on Delhi Vadodara route on six days of the week, excluding Sunday. If the private airliners can operate on both these routes then what prevents Air India Management to do so on such lucrative and profitable routes? asked Shukla.Vadodara is engineering hub and fertiliser producing centre with the presence of multi national companies, he said.He also demanded retaining Air India office premises located in Fatehgunj locality in the city from where air India has been functioning since 1970. It is most convenient for every body to visit this office, he added.Shukla made this request after learning about the shifting of the office to Tandalja Vasna area on the outskirt of the city.

Australia & China agreed to increase flights

Australia and China on Sunday agreed to increase the number of flights between the countries as they move towards talks on an open skies accord, Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said.
Under a new air services agreement, the number of seats available on flights will increase by 70 percent by the end of the year, he said.Today's announcement is a significant breakthrough, reinforcing the importance of our economic relationship with China, now Australia's largest trading partner, Albanese said in a statement.

It will allow the airlines of both sides to better compete within the rapidly growing Asia Pacific region and it positions the Australian aviation industry at the forefront of the rapidly developing Chinese market.Under the agreement, the national airlines of both countries can now offer up to 10,500 seats per week between Australia and China, 2,000 more than previously. They will be able to offer a further 4,000 seats from November. The latest agreement contains a shared commitment to commencing negotiations aimed at concluding an 'open skies' agreement, an outcome that would remove most if not all of the existing limitations on Australian and Chinese airlines operating between our two countries, Albanese said.

The Asia Pacific has overtaken North America as the world's largest air travel market, with 647 million passengers taking commercial flights in 2009, the International Air Transport Association IATA said this month.Albanese said last year close to 1.4 million people travelled between Australia and China, with growth on routes between the countries averaging 16.9 percent over the past five years.

Love improves with age: study

As Valentine's Day arrives this year, it would seem there's no love like an old love.New Canadian research suggests that older couples may actually be more in love than younger couples. Researchers at the Universite du Quebec a Montreal have found older couples in their retirement years are much more likely to report higher levels of satisfaction with their love lives than younger couples. The study is being funded by the Canadian Institute for Health Research, the largest federal funding agency for health research.

The research team is headed up by psychologist Gilles Trudel. So far, the researchers have completed the first part of their study; the second part is ongoing. The researchers are using a recognized international model for measuring relationship satisfaction, known as the Spanier Dyadic Adjustment Scale. The study is looking at 511 older Quebec couples who are in their retirement years. Those couples scored between 119 and 120 on the Spanier scale, compared to the Canadian average of 114.That might not sound like much of a difference, but the difference of five to six points is very important; it is statistically very significant, Trudel said.

Although other studies in the world have hinted that older couples are happiest, Trudel said this study is the first in the world to involve such a large sampling of older people. What's surprising is that there hasn't been a lot of research in this area involving older couples, said Trudel.Trudel said divorce rates among older couples are generally very low and so it stands to reason that older couples as a whole are generally a happier cohort than younger couples as a whole.

At the same time, he said, older couples who still have good health and whose children have been raised generally have less stress in their lives than younger couples. They can travel more and spent more time having fun, said Trudel. But the main thing happy older couples say they have in abundance is a proven record of good communication with their spouses. It's critical to a happy long-term relationship, said Trudel. Most of the couples who are part of the study are from Montreal, Quebec City, Sherbrooke, and Trois-Rivieres.

Flights between Australia and China

A sharp increase in flights between Australia and China is on the horizon as a result of a new air services agreement between the two countries.Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said the deal, finalised in time for Chinese New Year on Sunday, would boost available seats on routes between Australia and China by 70 per cent as of December.Immediately, the airlines of both countries will be able to offer up to 10,500 seats per week between Australia's major airports and China, and the capacity will be raised by a further 4000 seats from November.

Seat allocations were previously capped at 8500.Of the the additional seats for Chinese airlines, 2000 are earmarked for flights in and out of Brisbane. There will be more opportunities for Australian airlines to operate between China and other destinations, such as Europe, too.Mr Albanese said Australia and China were negotiating towards an open skies deal, which would remove most, if not all, of the existing limitations on airlines operating between the two countries.Today's announcement is a significant breakthrough, reinforcing the importance of our economic relationship with China, he said in a statement. It positions the Australian aviation industry at the forefront of the rapidly developing Chinese market.Mr Albanese said nearly 1.4 million people travelled between Australia and China in 2009.Passenger growth on routes between the two countries has averaged almost 17 per cent over the past five years.

Evansville airport increased flights

The Evansville Regional Airport said they are adding more flights after seeing an increase in air travel compared to last year.Airport officials said their first priority is bringing back their Memphis connection. That was a real popular hub for us, airport spokesperson Dianna Kissel said. The flight was cut last September in an effort to save money during the merger between Delta and Northwest.

It will be one, 6:30 a.m. flight per day running Monday through Friday, starting in April. It is on the schedule now, so if people are traveling after April they can find it online, Kissel said. As long as people are using it on a regular basis, they'll keep it.The airport will also be adding a second flight to Dallas. This morning flight, in addition to their current afternoon one, will be offered seven days a week through American Eagle. Our Dallas flight has always been popular, but it was an afternoon flight, so it doesn't make it very convenient to catch a connection out west, Kissel said. So, this morning route will be excellent for that.

The morning Dallas flight will only be seasonal, and is temporarily scheduled to run from April through June.Airport officials said more flights could mean savings for passengers.Anytime we can add more seats and more competition, it brings the fares down, Kissel said. The more people that use the service, the better chances we have of getting those flights and getting those fares more competitive.

Flights to Orlando were back to normal today

Flights were back to normal today at Orlando International Airport after snow in Atlanta and, in the Mid Atlantic earlier in the week, forced the cancellation of dozens of them.Only two flights had been canceled as of 2:30 p.m., including one to Atlanta.Travelers still may want to contact their airline before heading for the airport.

Flights to Chicago

A coalition whose efforts helped add Atlanta and Boston as destinations out of Atlantic City International Airport in 2009 is again targeting Chicago as a primary destination this year.
Air service to the Windy City has been on the top of the group’s list for two years. The South Jersey Transportation Authority, or SJTA, which runs the airport, and the gaming and nongaming entities that make up the rest of the coalition want service to Chicago by the end of the year.

SJTA Executive Director Bart Mueller said his agency discussed Chicago service with Spirit Airlines, Atlantic City International’s longtime carrier, and AirTran Airways, which started service at the facility in June. The SJTA also has talked with Texas based Southwest Airlines about Chicago service, he said. Those airlines are investigating whether the Chicago service is viable, he said.Airline officials could not be reached for comment.Southwest flew out of Atlantic City International during the recent snowstorms, but not as part of new service.

Mueller said the airline bused passengers from Philadelphia International Airport to Atlantic City International when the Philadelphia facilities were closed because of the bad weather. The Southwest flights then left from Atlantic City International, he said. The coalition was born out of the economic downturn that hurt Atlantic City’s gaming industry. Coalition members, ranging from gaming organizations to hotels to chambers of commerce, decided that adding more service at Atlantic City International was one way to bring in more business.

Chicago, Atlanta and Boston were the three targeted markets. Spirit began service to Boston in May, and Mueller said the airline will add a second daily flight to that city this May. AirTran began service to Atlanta in June. Also last year, Canada-based WestJet began service to Toronto.
Greater Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce President Joseph Kelly said the Chicago service remains crucial, as it opens the area to potential tourist business from the Midwest. That’s important to us, he said.Should the Chicago service begin, Kelly said, the region has to be ready to successfully market itself to Midwest residents.

When WestJet started its Toronto service, the airline began a major marketing program that highlighted Atlantic City and related attractions and events. The Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority brought travel writers from Canada to the city in hopes of getting good coverage, which could stimulate interest from travelers. While the Chicago service remains a priority, the SJTA also is talking to other airlines about service. Those airlines include JetBlue, American Eagle, Continental, ExpressJet Airlines and United Express, SJTA spokeswoman Sharon Gordon said.

Study abroad with experience

I was 12 years old the first time I ran away from home and I made it all the way to Quebec, Canada. My escape from the dull suburbs of Connecticut did not take the typical form of childhood runaway: I did not leave the house on foot, nor did I hitchhike. In fact, my mother bought my ticket, and I was accompanied by most of my French class. I am not adventurous enough to strike out unplanned and penniless, but I have always been willing to study abroad. It is only now, three continents and seven countries later, that I am finally asking the question, Why leave home? Now that I am at the University of Cape Town UCT in South Africa, I fear that I have been lulled into the convincing, if illusive, narrative of study abroad as a transformative experience.

During my adjustment to the slower pace of life at UCT, I have had a lot of time to reflect and question aspects of my life at Princeton. For example, why is it that my dorm at Princeton can’t be a two-story, three-bedroom apartment with 1.5 baths, a full kitchen and a stunning view of the majestic Table Mountains? And why can’t 18-year-olds go to bars? My greatest and most troubling questions regard the nature, purpose and intent of studying abroad. Why is it that 150 Princeton students feel the need to leave their comfortable homes and crisscross the world this semester? What do we find in distant lands? Do our discoveries change us? These are not easy questions to answer, and I do not mean to offhandedly dismiss the importance of cross-cultural interaction. Rather, my goal is to critically reassess what study abroad is and is not capable of.

Princeton has an explicit goal in supporting study abroad. The Office of International Programs OIP website describes study abroad as an opportunity for students to enrich and expand their education through firsthand encounters with the peoples, cultures and contemporary concerns of other regions of the world.” These goals are certainly laudable, and the student testimonials on the website reify study abroad as a transformative experience. One student described studying abroad as “the most important part” of their Princeton experience while another suggested that studying abroad will “give you some perspective on life. I have said similar things about my study abroad experiences in Tanzania and Ghana, but the idea that one can best understand life only through travel is problematic.

OIP’s mission statement asserts an idealized narrative of study abroad that says a lot about the constraints on thought, expression and independence at Princeton. There is a narrative to studying abroad: One must travel far from home and be introduced to a world of radical new experience in order to truly appreciate or at least reflect on what makes home unique. And surely my own experiences in distant places with difficult to pronounce names have been fueled by a hope that travel will trigger transformative growth. But what of those who are not fortunate enough to travel? How do they experience growth? The study abroad model suggests that critical reflection is difficult, if not impossible, from within the confines of a given locality or institution. I reject such an assertion. Those who cannot afford whether by dint of finances, family or medical need to travel abroad are not incomplete people, robbed of a transformative, life-changing, perspective-granting experience. It is entirely possible, and I suspect quite common, for students to travel abroad without ever having to reflect or reassess any part of their lives.

The narrative that travel and experience create the possibility for disrupting norms and privileges is equal parts reality and myth. I am reminded of conversations I have had with white Americans while in predominantly black countries. I asked one of my peers if they felt out of place, white in a sea of black bodies, while riding on a bus. He responded, “I never thought about it. I’ve always just assumed that I’m in the majority wherever I go.” It is hard for me to imagine a sense of privilege so pervasive that, even when people are a minority, they are blinded to reality. A keener student noted that, for the first time, he noticed the significance of race while in Africa. It was almost as if he had never noticed power, class or privilege while living in America. Yet nearly every American city suffers from segregation and wealth inequality. These two anecdotes, while certainly not representative of all experiences abroad, hint that travel in and of itself does not dislodge privilege or make experiences at home more intelligible.

Study abroad is sold as a travel experience that can affect meaningful personal transformation. But one doesn’t have to travel far or at all to experience radically different ways of living. If Princeton students want to be aware of race or privilege, they need not travel to some far-off and distant land, but just have to talk to our peers, uninhibited by the pervasive norms which make discussions about religion, sex, race and class taboo. The project to send Princeton students abroad is laudable. It attempts to stretch us beyond our limits and force us into challenging situations that can lead to productive dialogue. But what studying abroad does not teach us is empathy: the ability to meaningfully engage and understand the lived experience of others. We should seek to understand not just distant and alien cultures, but our friends, neighbors, co-workers and subordinates. If Princeton students can walk through the suburbs of Princeton without recognizing that it’s a ghetto of mostly white, mostly upper-class U.S. citizens, then it’s entirely possible to imagine them walking through Cape Town without noticing poverty or violence. Study abroad is little more than a long vacation if students have failed to learn the power of empathy.
